A dental emergency can be distressing so we make it our policy to always see a patient with a dental emergency on the same day if you call us in the morning.

We class a dental emergency as anything that causes you pain or where you experience bleeding or swelling. This can include a chipped, cracked or knocked-out tooth.

Advice for some common dental emergencies, Hampton Wick

Here are some of the more common dental emergencies and some advice on how to best treat these issues whilst you wait to see an emergency dentist. Call the surgery at Hampton Wick for any concerns or more advice about dental emergencies.

Knocked out tooth or chipped tooth

If you are in pain or have suffered injuries as a result of a fall, seek medical advice from your doctor or A&E. Save your knocked-out tooth if possible and keep it in some milk to take with you to your emergency dentist. Save any pieces from a chipped tooth to take with you to the dentist. Rinse your mouth out with warm water and apply a cold compress if you’re in pain.

Toothache

Take Ibuprofen where possible to deal with the pain. Apply a cold compress to deal with swelling.

Abscesses

Take painkillers if you have any pain. Rinse your mouth in saltwater to also relieve the pain.

Lost crown

Take paracetamol to deal with the pain and avoid hot or cold drinks. Take the lost crown with you to the emergency dentist if you still have it.

Lost filling

Take paracetamol to deal with any pain and avoid any hot or cold drinks. You can buy some temporary filling material from the chemist to use as a substitute until you see your emergency dentist.
