How can you look after your smile?

There are simple things you can do to make your treatment even safer in the long term, however.

What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment can not only improve the appearance of your teeth but it can also improve the health of your teeth!

By undergoing orthodontic treatment and straightening your teeth, you are spreading the biting pressure more evenly across all of your teeth.

This in turn alleviates the strain on your jaw muscles, the same muscles that can often cause issues with your jaw joints.

Why should I have orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment does not only improve the overall appearance of your teeth and smile, but it also helps to improve the long term health of your teeth!

By straightening your crowded or “crooked” teeth, orthodontic treatment will improve how your teeth bite together.

Often people’s teeth do not meet together correctly, but this puts unnecessary strain on your jaw muscles and also damages your teeth.

This can also lead to jaw joint problems which can sometimes also be accompanied by headaches.

When is orthodontic treatment used?

There are a wide variety of dental problems that orthodontic treatment can solve. These include;

Crowding of the teeth. Crowding is often caused when there isn’t enough space for your teeth in your mouth. This can often be due to having a narrow jaw.

Protruding upper front teeth. Protruding teeth are one of the most common causes for the requirement of orthodontic treatment.

Impacted teeth. This is when some of your teeth grow in the wrong position, so they may not emerge as they should.

Asymmetrical or “crooked” teeth. This is when your upper and lower teeth do not match up together.

A deep bite is when your upper front teeth almost completely overlap the lower front teeth and a reverse bite is when your upper teeth bite inside of your lower teeth. An open bite is when your upper and lower front teeth do not touch when your jaw is closed normally.

Will I need to have any teeth taken out to make room for orthodontic treatment?

Many people suffer with overcrowded teeth.

Often, we will be able to move your teeth to make room, but in some cases, some permanent teeth may need to be removed in order for there to be enough room.

How do you straighten my teeth?

Here at Reading Smiles, we offer a wide range of orthodontic treatments, which are all most commonly referred to as “braces”.

In order to ensure that we have treatment options available to suit everyone’s own individual needs, we carry out multiple orthodontic options such as the discreet, Invisalign, clear removable braces.

How long do orthodontic treatments take to complete?

Depending on a number of factors, including the complexity and severity of your own individual case, orthodontic treatment can take between 5 to 24 months to straighten your teeth.

At your initial consultation at Reading Smiles, we will advise you on all of the different treatment options that are available to you and provide you with an estimate of how long they will take to complete, in order to help you to make an informed decision on which orthodontic treatment to go ahead with.

How many visits will it take?

This depends entirely on the type of orthodontic treatment that you chose to have.

This could be visits between every 2 weeks to every 8 weeks.

Will it hurt?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions here at Reading Smiles.

Braces may feel strange at the beginning of your treatment and can cause some slight discomfort.

This often only last for a short period of time as your teeth and mouth will quickly settle and adjust to the brace and usually, after just a couple of days, most discomfort will have subsided.

How much will braces cost?

The cost of straightening your teeth will vary, depending on the type of orthodontic treatment and the severity of your case.

Here at Reading Smiles, at your initial consultation, we will offer you guidance on all of the different orthodontic options available to you, which will also specify the costs of the treatment options discussed.

No matter which orthodontic treatment you decide to go with, you will receive complimentary teeth whitening (worth £295) and removable retainers (worth £150) at no extra charge!

What causes crooked teeth?

There are a multiple number of reasons as to why your teeth may have grown, be growing crooked or sit overcrowded.

They can be inherited from your parents. Often the children of parents that suffer with malformed jaws are more likely to have crooked teeth.

Sometimes, your baby teeth may fall our too early, this can also be a cause for crowded or crooked teeth.

Another common reason can be that your jaw is too small to accommodate for all of your adult teeth.
